Kristen Schaal was born 24 January 1978. She is an American actress, writer and comedian, best known for her role as Mel in the HBO series Flight of the Conchords and as a contributor on The Daily Show.
She co-hosts the weekly show Hot Tub at Comix comedy club, which was named "Best Variety Show in 2005" by Time Out New York's readers poll. She also appears on the Peoples Improv Theater Improv on the team, "Big Black Car", which was awarded best improv troupe of the 2005 Emerging Comics of New York prices. She is one of the founders of the theater the striking Viking Story Pirates which adapts stories about children in sketches and songs.
Schaal is best known for her role in HBO's Flight of the Conchords as the stalker fan Mel, a role which earned her a nomination for Ewwy Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy in 2009. She was also a fictional consultant and author of Season 11 of South Park, appeared on BBC's Never Mind the Buzzcocks as a contestant on Noel Fielding's Team, and played the boss in his mockumentary Fuse apprentice. She made her first appearance as a "special commentator" on Comedy Central's The Daily Show, 13 March 2008. She is often presented as the Daily Show's "Senior Women's Issues correspondent".
